Additional Coursework

Here you will find coursework from my first year of the Bachelor of Education program that provides insights into my growth as an educator and my evolving understanding of effective pedagogy.

Children’s Book All Sorts of Rocks

Childrens-Book-2

For my language and literacy class, I went through the process of writing, editing, and illustrating a children’s book so that I can use it as a tool to engage my students in fun and imaginative way. I wanted to be able to create a lesson that accompanies my book, so I focused on the grade one math curriculum and focused my story on sorting 2D and 3D objects based on specific attributes. Not only can I use this to hook students in with a fun story, but I am also sharing my creative side in hopes to connect with students on a more personal level and make their learning more relatable.

Social Justice Initiative Project – Mindfulness & Well-Being Club

This is a social justice project I completed for my social studies course, and I decided to focus on student mindfulness and well-being. This proposed initiative is an after-school club for students in grades 3-5 to learn strategies for relaxation and emotional regulation. I want to encourage my students to practice mindfulness daily, as it allows for them to build better connections with themselves and others and can assist in improving students’ overall happiness and success. I am very passionate about student success and well-being, and I believe that begins with taking care of ourselves and creating environments that are safe and welcoming to all.

Place-Based Learning Project

To help students build social studies competencies out in the community, for my social studies class I created a plan for a place-based field trip that has students learning on the land. This idea coincides with the grade 3 curriculum and has students connecting with the land to understand the importance of Indigenous knowledge and traditions. The incorporation of Indigenous pedagogies and experiential learning is important to me as I believe it allows for deeper learning and growth. Holistic experiences such as this offer unique experiences that allow for students to understand how their learning is connected to the real world and showcases the value of education outside of the classroom.

Inclusion Statement

To outline the ways in which I believe myself to be an inclusive educator, here is a copy of my inclusion statement as completed for my teaching and learning class. I believe that being an inclusive educator is a responsibility I have, and I am committed to bettering myself to ensure that I am creating a space that is safe and accessible for all my future students. Inclusivity is an important step in the truth and reconciliation process, and I dedicated to fostering an environment that actively supports the decolonization of the education system.
