The Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action provide a foundation for myself as a teacher candidate to understand my role in fostering reconciliation through education. To provide a culturally safe and responsive classroom I must implement the Calls to Action and understand the history and legacy of residential schools and the devastating impact they had on Indigenous peoples, and the ongoing intergenerational trauma. The Calls highlight systemic racism and bias within the education system and urge me as a teacher candidate to be aware of my own biases and actively work towards creating inclusive and equitable learning environments. I have a moral and professional responsibility to incorporate these Calls into my practice, and I understand that reconciliatory work requires ongoing learning, commitment, and a genuine desire to learn and grow to build respectful relationships.
